Sindhudurg the only district in Indian scenario totally free of pollution, endowed with natural beauty. And so is Sawantwadi, our princely city, a treasure of heavenly tranquility and splendour. Its sunrise accompanied with melodies songs of birds which prevails the day through. High hills around, resembles like green canopy trying to reach the sky.

Sawantwadi an erstwhile princely state ruled by Sawant Bhonsale family for over 400 years. 300 years back, they established their capital town. The town then known as Sunderwadi i.e. 'Beautiful town' and now known as Sawantwadi. It is all set to welcome nature loving tourists with Heritage, Handicraft & Hospitality including authentic Malvani cuisine.

Sawantwadi is a miniature replica of Konkan training along the Western Ghats of India. It is replete with Ecological and Cultural Heritage providing rich and unique bio-diversity with interesting echo-tourism locations such as Naredra Hills and Narendra Forest Park as well as heritage spots such as Rajwada (Royal Palace), Mathi and several others. Monsoon rain water of Western Ghats canalized on to lake and absorbing the rest deep underground provides the small town lush greenery throughout the year and creates ecological wonders like Atmeshwar Tali.

Rich, cultural, artistic and cultural heritage of Sawantwadi is the lifeline of it's economy. Colourful wooden toys seen in most parts of India and manufactured in Sawantwadi. These local tradition going back to seventh decades using simple raw material such as timber, paper-mache and laqour. The artisans of Sawantwadi creates colourful toys painted with natural dyes. The local artisans are skilled in the art of painting of playing card (Ganjifa), wooden and slay artifacts, jewellery and other embellishment. The painting have intricate patterns depicting royal life style as well as spiritual beliefs of the people in the region dating back almost the 7th century.

Sawantwadi is an interesting Tourist Circuit. It is the entry point from famous tourist place Goa. The two proposed sites of Shiroda and Mochemad, having Five Star Beach Resorts, are also in near vicinity. The famous hill station Amboli which is known as queen of hills. An international standard Golf Courses and Adventure Sports Centre (like hang gliding etc.) are proposed at this hill station. Amboli is also known for wild life. The proposed water site at Mulde-Ambadpal, Kudal is also half hour run from Sawantwadi is conventionally linked with railway station and airport. National Highway No. 17 passes through Sawantwadi. Sawantwadi road railway station is ten minutes run and Dabolim-Goa Airport is one and half hour run from this city. Major cities like Belgaum (Karnataka) Kolhapur (Maharashtra) and Panjim-Goa are 100 kms. and 50 kms. respectively and the proposed International Air Port is 22 kms. The world famous sea fort Sindhudurg, Malvan, is also in near vicinity.

In rainy season this area looks like newly bride with green sari, endowed beauty. The delicious fruits like Mango (Alphanso)- The King of fruits, Jackfruit, Cashunuts, Jamoon, Kokam etc. can't stop you having its taste. Nature endowed the city with beauty which justifies it's name Sunderwadi on geographical account Sawantwadi is a fine example of peripheral city. On the periphery of Moti Talaw this beautiful city is situated. The famous Moti Talaw is a pearl situated in natural beautiful shell. Sawantwadi surrounded by high green tree & Hills - Narendra, Amboli, Sahyadri.

Despite the limited tourist amenities in Sindhudurg district, international tourists visit the remote yet well known hill station of Amboli. known for its unique biodiversity, flora and fauna. Amboli has 10-12 species of fauna including tiger, giant squirrel, leopard, bison, wild boar, hedgehogs, moon jack and languors. As part of the Sahyadri hills, it has the second largest biodiversity in the whole of India, and hence is preferred by students and research scientists working on medicinal plants and herbs.
