Introduction of Municipal Council

The Sawantwadi Municipal Council was established 120 years ago. With the 74'" Constitutional Amendment coming into force, the municipalities as local self-government have a wider role to play. As one of the most progressive Municipal Councils in Maharashtra, pioneering campaigns for cleanliness and ecological restoration of the region, the Municipal Council of Sawantwadi has chosen specific thrust areas such as conservation of environment, heritage and art and craft, eradication of poverty, employment generation and socio-economic planning. It has chosen tourism as the priority sector to take care of all the aspects mentioned above. The Municipal Council of Sawantwadi has considered the ecological, cultural and socio-economic aspects in the planning of tourism in Sawantwadi. The basic amenities are already either commissioned or nearing completion.

The role of Local Self Government has changed considerably after 74Ih constitutional amendment. Previously the municipalities in India had a limited role of providing basic amenities like roads, lights, water-supply, cleaning of public places and sewers, disposing of night soil, maintaining crematories, maintenance of public park, fire safety, basic health and educational amenities. The 74lh constitutional amendment has entrusted more important duties like urban planning, socio-economical planning, solid waste management, protection and conservation of environment, safeguarding the interests of weaker sections including women and children, handicapped, slum improvement, urban poverty elevation, promotion of cultural, educational and aesthetic aspects.

Sawantwadi, a small town having a population of 22,900 people, has made efforts to perform the duties entrusted by the Constitution by reorganizing the development of the town for the welfare of people.
