Brief History About Sawantwadi

In ancient days town Sawantwadi was know as " Sunderwadi" meaning thereby a beautiful place. This town was established during the late years of seventeenth century. Prior to that the area was under the rules of Chalukya, Yadav & Brahmin dynasties during the period from 6th to 16th century. The Adilshah of Bijapur also ruled this province subsequently till 1627.

The oldest Ruling Family in Konkan (Maharashtra) are the Sawant Bhonsle's of Sawantwadi. The Kingdom was established in the year 1627 by Khem Sawant I. In the year 1692 Khem Sawant II established Sawantwadi as his capital which was a part of the Village of Charatha. Here he built a fort known as "Nava Kot" (New Fort)

The Gadi of Sawant - Bhonsale Dnyastry of Sawantwadi was founded here by Shri. Khem Sawant I. His grandson Lakhan Sawant who was a contemptorary of Great Shivaji Maharaj use to occupy at all times. A fort situated on a hill in the village Charatha. Since it was a well protected area. After his death his brother's son Khem Sawant II built another fort on the side of the lake, also in the same village and called it Sundarwadi. This became capital of state in 1690.

Being capital of Sawant Bhonsale Dnyastry letter on Sundarwadi being called Sawantwadi. Sawantwadi which was also the capital of former Sawantwadi state is therefore in to parts
i) Juna kot - which was in existence prior to advent of the Sawant-Bhonsale and
ii) Nava Kot - which was built by the then King Khem Sawant II.
